Hatha Yoga
Yoga teaches us to be in the present, not to dwell in the past,
or to race ahead to the future, but simple to be.
The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root "yuj" which has many meanings, one of which is "to unite". Yoga is therefore seen as union between the mind, body and spirit.
The Sanskrit roots of Hatha break down into "Ha" and "Tha". "Ha" refers to the sun, a positive masculine symbol whereas "Tha" refers to the moon, a receptive female symbol. Generally Hatha yoga is seen as a union of the positive sun-drenched masculine energy of inhalation with the cleansing cooling feminine energy of exhalation.
Pranyama and Breathing
Breath is energy and energy is life. Without this we would die. Intelligent breathing increases vitality and lengthens our lives whereas careless and unintelligent breathing will tend to shorten our lives by decreasing vitality and lowering resistance to disease.
Correct breathing should be one of the most natural things we do. Unfortunately due to incorrect posture, lack of suitable exercise and stress, our breathing is of such poor quality that it does little more than keep us alive.
Pranyama or "the Science of Breath" is one of the limbs of Hatha Yoga and teaches basic breathing techniques such as Complete Breath, Rhythmical breathing, Alternate Nostril Breathing and Cleansing Breath
Movement - Asanas
Yoga movements are unique and are designed to be carried out in a slow and controlled manner with the correct breathing. Known as "asanas", correctly performed they will strengthen and tone the body and increase flexibility and stamina. They also have further benefits such as massaging the internal organs, thus promoting better circulation and digestion, and helping with such problems as asthma and allergies.
Through a combination of physical control involving the use of movement and specialised breathing and relaxation techniques, Hatha Yoga helps us to re-establish mental and physical stability. Control of the body leads to control of the mind and balancing of the spirit.
